An exhaust gas temperature gauge (EGT gauge) or pyro gauge is used to monitor the exhaust gas temperature. EGT gauges are found standard in some vehicles, however the flood of turbo diesel engine vehicles available nowadays has caused a jump in popularity to be one of the "must have" gauges.
By monitoring EGT, the driver can get an idea of the vehicle's air fuel ratio. At rich air-fuel ratios, the exhaust gas temperature either increases or decreases depending on the fuel. High temperatures (typically above 900 °C) can be an indicator of dangerous conditions that can lead to major engine failure.
